3 Ways to Capture Natural Moments when Photographing Families

1. GET RID OF EXPECTATIONS:
If you have the expectation of capturing the “perfect” family photo it really creates anxiety and stress around the entire photo shoot. Remember to just be in the moment, feel what is going on around you, and throw out any expectations you have. Capturing real moments actually happens when we actually LET real moments happen… sounds so silly, but it’s true! I go into sessions realizing that I am not trying to capture perfect, I am trying to capture each families unique connection. This takes time to figure out each situation, listening to what the family is all about, and then allowing a space for them to show you who they are.

2. GAMES:
I play A LOT of games with clients. Games create natural, real connections because they are actually having fun and playing together as a family! Who wants to just blankly stare into a camera and try to look “natural”… no one!  Playing games is the best way to get people to drop their walls and show you a bit of who they really are. I love the game “telephone” and I shoot the entire interaction because you don’t know when the magic will exactly unfold. Play and movement is so important when you are thinking of games you can play with families. People will get out of their heads and into their hearts naturally.

3. MOVEMENT:
Having families run, walk, spin, kiss, dance, and of course frolic;) is the best way to create genuine smiles! Try skipping without smiling… I dare you. Remember to just give your family a task; Run towards me- it’s a race! Skip to the bridge! Mom, grab your sons hand and dad twirl your daughter around! People are waiting for your direction. Be confident in your decisions and if they don’t work, it’s ok! Just go onto the next idea!
