Kid-Friendly DIY Christmas Craft: Ornament + Garland

If you want your kids to learn the joy of giving this holiday season, this kid-friendly DIY photo ornament is perfect. This short, 6-step craft took our little project testers just under an hour from start to finish and is the perfect gift for grandparents, and teachers. We especially love the versatility of this project; you can loop a shorter piece of ribbon through just one wood circle to make an ornament, or string them all together to make a garland!

Before you start, you will need the following items:

Kid-Friendly DIY Christmas Craft: Photo Ornament + Garland

Instructions

STEP 1: Trace the wooden circle on the back of one of the photos with a pencil.

STEP 2: Take the scissors, and trim the photo to size. Cut it even smaller if you want a thin wood border around the outside like ours. Use that photo to trace a circle on the back of the other photos, and cut them all out.

STEP 3: Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on the top of the wooden ornament, and then on the back of the photo. Place the sticky sides together, and gently smooth the photo to get rid of any bubbles. Repeat with all the photos.

STEP 4: Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the photo, and air-dry for 30 min.

STEP 5: Have an adult use scissors to gently poke a hole through the photos.

STEP 6:

Ornament: Cut a piece of string or ribbon a minimum of 7 in long, and thread it through the hole. Tie both ends of the string together, making sure there is a good amount of space around the ornament so it can be hung on a tree branch.

Garland: Cut a piece of string or ribbon a little longer than the desired length of your garland, we recommend a minimum of 3 feet. Thread the string through the holes, and tie a loop at each end of the string so it’s easy to hang. To help the wood discs hang straight, we recommend adding a small dot of hot glue on the back of the ornament to attach to the ribbon.

TIP- Make sure to get a picture of the artists with their finished work!

We love this kid-friendly DIY Christmas Craft as a gift, but also as an annual family tradition. Many families take photos at Christmas every year (like Christmas Eve pajamas or Santa Photos!), and this is a great way to commemorate Christmases of the past.
