I took 1,000 Photos in Peru, now what?

Travel Journal

It’s not every day we get to hike through Machu Picchu, or float through Lake Titicaca on a boat made of reefs. We spend months, even years, planning a big vacation, it deserves to be remembered.

I have always hoped I could take my children on a humanitarian trip to a 3rd world country at some point in their life.

For Christmas (2016) I gave my 3 boys the gift of service. They each opened a collage print of children from Peru (that I created with random photos I found online:) and an itinerary of the service trip I had purchased through Revive Humanity. We had 6 months to prepare for our journey. (Ethan hates pictures, and presents and Christmas … he’s 16:)

Before leaving on any extensive trip, I plan ahead as to how I will document it.

All of my travel albums are 6×8. I store them on my shelf, ready to pull out & share at any moment. These travel albums are my recipe books to LIFE. I get more calls for ingredients to certain countries than I do for chocolate chip cookies:). Each album is a treasure, filled with tangible money, tickets, itineraries, and photos of course. Photo Albums not only bring back the memories of our journey, but the emotions we felt. This post shares why I prefer photo albums over bound books.

How I Documented Peru

This service trip was amazing. We flew out of SLC, Utah July 14 and returned July 25. Flights are not fun, but they do give me time to put together my album before I even get home (because let’s be honest, the minute we return from any trip, we’re inundated with all the things that have piled up while we were gone). I have my prints ready to upload and order before I step off the plane. Depending on hotel wi-fi connections, I can upload and even order before I leave.

Camera: iPhone 6 & Nikon 610

Remember my post about Airdrop? It’s still the greatest iOS invention. I can toggle photos from my phone to my computer, or my dSLR photos from computer to my phone without wi-fi via Airdrop.

Organizing Digital Photos: While traveling, we want to enjoy the trip! We spent our days working and serving in orphanages. Every night we’d come home and have 1-2 hour of down time before bed. I created folders for each day on my computer and dumped all photos taken that day in their appropriate folder.

Looking back at landscape photos isn’t super exciting to me, but with an added overlay, the story comes to life. Some photos work and some don’t. I picked some of my favorite shots and added digital overlays in photoshop and the Persnickety software.

The Final Album: Simple Stories 6×8 album and page protectors. This is the first time I’ve used this brand and I love the quality! (Order online at scrapbook.com)

I also used Simple Stories 4×6 landscape and 6×8 and 3×4 portrait orientation pockets pages. In order to include ALL 1,000 photos of this journey, I created 20 6×8 collages in the Free Persnickety Prints collage software ($1.99 each).

Additional 12×2 Prints! Because my photos are already uploaded to my Persnickety online album, I can easily drag and drop them into the Free 12×12 Memory Page Software to quickly create 12×12 prints to add to my family’s 12×12 yearly album too (only $1.99 each!) It’s so fast & easy!
